Mississippi is the birthplace of the blues, but Republicans aren't singing them. For a state with only five congressional districts, Mississippi packs a good deal of political wallop. Republican Sen. Trent Lott is Senate majority leader, Republican Sen. Thad Cochran heads two Senate subcommittees, and Rep. Roger Wicker was the first president of the Republican class of 1994. Former influential Republican National Committee Chairman Haley Barbour calls the Magnolia State his home. Finally, Gov. Kirk Fordice, who was first elected in 1991, is Mississippi's first Republican governor in 117 years. back to top RELATED SITESNOTE: External sites will open in a new browser window.
