One of the last states to impose an income tax (in the 1990s), Connecticut is the wealthiest state (per capita) in the United States. Its economy relies on defense and the insurance industry. That lack of diversification has occasionally meant tough economic times, though. Sen. Chris Dodd, General Chairman of the Democratic National Committee during the 1996 campaign, has been mentioned as a possible presidential contender. In 1996, former Gov. and Sen. Lowell Weicker gave serious consideration to an independent bid for the presidency. In 1990, the Constitution State elected Weicker governor as an independent. Former President George Bush's father, Prescott Bush, represented the state in the U.S. Senate. President Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton first met in New Haven, Connecticut at Yale University Law School. back to top RELATED SITESNOTE: External sites will open in a new browser window.
