Candidate Profile from Congressional QuarterlyDoug Ose (R) of SacramentoOpen Seat
This is Ose's first elective office, and he believes his business experience will bring a much-needed reality check to Washington. "I'm not a politician, I'm a businessman," he told The Sacramento Bee. "I understand what it takes to get up in the morning, go to work, open those doors and make a profit. ... We need to send to Congress people who have that real-world experience." Ose's business focused on the development of mini-storage facilities and duplexes in and around the Sacramento area. Ose's beliefs will fit in well with the House GOP conference. He lists tax cuts, in particular the elimination of the so-called marriage penalty, as a top priority. Under a wrinkle in the tax laws, some two-earner married couples pay more in taxes than they would filing as single individuals. Ose also supports overhauling the tax code, though he carefully has avoided choosing sides in the fight between top Republicans about whether to move to a flat tax or a national sales tax. On a local issue, Ose supports construction of the Auburn Dam on the American River. Caught between the Sacramento and American rivers, the Sacramento Valley has tremendous flood problems. The Auburn Dam has been a subject of controversy for more than 20 years, and Ose supports creating interim measures to help prevent floods in the valley until the dam is completed. Ose also wants to see more decision-making on environmental issues take place at the local level, instead of the federal level. "No one cares more about the environment than those living in it," he said. |
