WESTERN BAY, Canada (CNN) -- Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula has an unusual, and very large, visitor from the north these days.
A 2,000-pound walrus, nicknamed "Wally" by the locals, showed up two weeks ago. Normally, walruses are found further north in the eastern Arctic, and Wally is only the fourth walrus sighted in Newfoundland this decade.
When Wally first appeared, he was unapproachable. But now he doesn't seem to mind the new friends he has made. However, officials are still warning residents not to get too close, because walruses can lunge very quickly.
Officials believe Wally will probably move on as soon as the weather becomes colder.
