This alarming notion seems far-fetched, but we gave it serious thought at a remote research station in Gabon.

Scientists here believe more deadly viruses will emerge from the rain forest.

"I'm sure that we're going to see in the future a lot of new diseases -- it's obvious. It's obvious."

Some researchers say it's clear why outbreaks of Ebola are increasing: Chain saw gangs bring down huge trees, possibly dragging from the canopy something that carries the virus; something that previously had rarely come into contact with humans.

Another possible explanation: Growing numbers of bushmeat hunters are killing monkeys and apes, animals that may be infected with viruses easily transmitted to humans. An infected chimpanzee was the cause of one Ebola outbreak last year.

If all this supports the idea that humans are suffering punishment for disturbing the primeval rain forest ...
