SAN FRANCISCO (CNN) -- A bald eagle chick arrived in the world just in time to help the San Francisco Zoo unveil its Bird Conservation Center.

The eagle hatched Tuesday from one of five bald eagle eggs under incubation at the center.

The $2 million facility that opened Thursday is dedicated to boosting the population of birds of prey that are on the nation's threatened or endangered species list.

About 30 threatened or endangered birds are being cared for at the center, including 12 bald eagles.

CNN affiliate KTVU contributed to this report.
