Tense Relations Between Israel And The Vatican
![]() Pope John Paul II visited Israel, but so far Pope Benedict XVI has not, even though the pontiff is said to have an open invitation. Catholic officials say the reason is that Pope Pius XII, who was head of the Catholic church during World War II, is pictured at the Yad Vashem holocaust museum in Jerusalem by a plaque accusing him of having ignored the wartime deportation of Jews. Meantime, Benedict has halted the process that would make Pius a Saint, according to reports "for fear of repercussions from Jewish groups." Benedict continues to insist that Pius XII, far from failing to act, quietly worked behind the scenes to save Jewish lives. (Above photo AP - The caption reads : "While the (gas) ovens were fed by day and by night, the most Holy Father who dwells in Rome did not leave his palace.")
Benedict continues to insist that Pius XII, far from failing to act, quietly worked behind the scenes to save Jewish lives.
that is not why Israel is mad at the Vatican.it is because PiusX11 did not recognize Israel, and he saw the crimes that was committed against the Palestinians by Israel.
@3:31; Pope Pius XII died in 1958, while east Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza were controlled by Jordan and Egypt at this time. If you have complaints about how Palestinians were treated they should be directed at the Egyptian and Jordanian governments who set up the Palestinian refugee camps. After all, these countries, and not Israel, controlled the Palestinians until 1967.
Pope Pius XII was a collaborator with the Nazis from the beginning and this started when he signed the Reichskonkordat agreement in July 1933. While Pope John Paul II did his best to improve Catholic-Jewish relations and even eliminated the false allegations about Jews killing Jesus from Catholic doctrine, it is unclear what positive steps Pope Benedict XVI will take. His service in the Nazi army that pepretrated the Holocaust and the murder of 6 million Jews, certainly is not a positive step in Catholic-Jewish relations. While it is well known that many members of the Protestant and Catholic clergy protested against the Nazis and even died in concentration camps, Pope Benedict XVI (although drafted)still served in the Nazi army. If he really opposed their ideology, he could have spoken out like other priests did, or he could have emigrated like other non-Jewish Germans did. Furthermore, by promoting the beatification of Pope Pius XII, who unlike others would not speak out when 6 million Jews were murdered by the Nazis, shows that Pope Benedict XVI could basically care less about improving Catholic-Jewish relations.

Pope Pius XII died in 1958, while east Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza were controlled by Jordan and Egypt at this time. in 1958 Israel existence was questioned by most of the world including the Vatican which did not recognize Israel as most of the world then. had nothing to do with the west bank and Gaza which were not occupied according to international law in 1958. Israel at the time was not able to convince piusX11 to recognize Israel that is why Israel was mad at him.Pius X11 felt at the time that a big Injustice have been committed against the Palestinians by Israel.

The following report was published in the Washington Post on July 3, 1999.
Washington Post Los Angeles, July 2 - Documents discovered by Jewish groups show that at the height of World War II Pope Pius XII warned against making Palestine a homeland for the "Hebrew race. In one document, a Vatican spokesman informed the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt that the Pope's help in saving 4,000 Slovakian Jewish children and getting them to Palestine must not be construed as a sign that he was in favour of setting up a Jewish homeland there. "It is true that at one time Palestine was inhabited by the Hebrew, but there is no axiom in history to substantiate the necessity of a people returning to a country they left 19 centuries before," said the letter the apostolic delegate to Washington, Archbishop A.G. Cicognani, wrote to FDR's special envoy to the Vatican, Ambassador Myron Taylor. this is the reason and nothing else.
In February of 1949, when an armistice came into effect, Pope Pius continued to demonstrate his concern for the plight of the Palestinian people and the status of the Holy Places. In his encyclical letter Redemptoris nostri cruciatus of 15 April 1949 he said “piteous appeals still reach us from numerous refugees, of every age and condition, who have been forced by the disastrous war to emigrate and even live in exile in concentration camps, the prey to destitution, contagious disease and perils of every sort.”
and this is why Israel is mad at this pope pius x11
@4:22; "in 1958 Israel existence was questioned by most of the world including the Vatican which did not recognize Israel as most of the world then."
Once again, I have to refute your propaganda. The UN voted to partition British mandate Palestine into two states--a Jewish State and an Arab State. The Jews accepted and the Arabs rejected this plan. Additionally, Israel became an official member of the UN in 1949, so your claim that most of the world did not recognize Israel at this time is false. Furthermore, this is an amazing achievement for Israel considering that currently there are 64 Muslim countries (22 of which are Muslim Arab) making up roughly 1/3 of the 191 members of the UN. It is obvious that these Arab dictatorships and other non-democratic regimes would not recognize Israel, but the fact remains that Western democracies do recognize Israel.
to 5.26.
until 1988 more countries recognize Palestine than Israel out of 159 members of the UN 96 countries recognize Palestine including the Holy sea. the Arabs refuse the partition because they are the father of the child and they did not want to accept part of what belongs to them. at the time in 1948 the whole western world and the soviet union at the time supported Israel and these were the Major powers then in another word this partition was forced on the Arabs. in 1948 there was less than 10 Muslim and Arab nation at the UN.
Pop Piux xii had full knowledge of the oppression, the torture, the extortion, violence and the sensless deaths that jewish people suffered during the Nazi era.Pius xii secretly condoned the Nazi atrocities against Jewish people. One should know that history sometimes draws the strangest consequences from the remotest cause and therefore one should condemned any effort on the part of the Vatican to declare Pius xii as a Saint because for every evil,crime,wrong,oppression,indiffe-rence,exploitation and axe's edge the perpetrators must be condemned whether they are dead or alive.
Iam grateful to Ms.Gorani for publishing this article. Her decency and sense of fairness are unsurpassed... Ben
Hundreds of Jerusalem Christians are
loosing residency rights in their City due to policies of the Israeli Ministry of Interior. The policy that aims to reduce the number of non-Jews in the City takes its toll on families and individuals who hold residency permits at foreign countries. No matter how long they travel abroad, no matter if they were born in Jerusalem before or after Israel occupied East Jerusalem, they are considered visitors in their own city. Palestinian Christians who make today not more than 9,000 will lose 15% of their population as a result of this policy. While Jews from all over the world and even converts to Judaism are allowed to immigrate to Israel under the Israeli Law of Return, the indigenous Jerusalemites are considered temporary residents. Originally, Seven years of being out of Jerusalem was the deadline for losing one's right to live in his own city. Now, only a proof of residency in another country is enough for Israel to consider Jerusalem as not "the center of life" for this person or family and thus deny them the right of living in their home town once they travel abroad.
"It is true that at one time Palestine was inhabited by the Hebrew, but there is no axiom in history to substantiate the necessity of a people returning to a country they left 19 centuries before..."
@4:35; 19 centuries?! The Jews did not willingly leave their homeland, they were expelled. Most of the Jews were only expelled from Israel in the 7th century AD by the Muslim Arab invaders. The fact remains that Jews were there before any other race, religion, or ethnic group that live today. Anyone who was in the land before them ceases to exist today. Should the Spaniards have no right to Spain?! After all, they were there first until the Muslim Arabs conquered the land in the 8th century AD. The Spaniards only remained in a small northern patch of the country. It took them about 8 centuries to gain their homeland back. It took the Jews about 12 centuries to gain their homeland back. There is absolutely no difference between the claims of Israel and Spain concerning international law. International law provides that land belongs to people if they have not given up their claim and if they owned the land first. The Jews owned the land first and never gave up their claim. All biblical, historical, and archaeological evidence shows that the Jews were in Israel before any Arab, Muslim, Christian, or so-called "Palestinian".
@7:35; Why aren't you concerned about the thousands of Palestinian Christians who have been kicked out of Bethlehem. Since 1948 when Jordan captured Bethlehem, the city lost its Christian majority and now has a Muslim majority. When Israel handed Bethlehem over to the Palestinian Authority in the 1990s, Bethlehem's Christians made up 33% of the city's population. Currently, the Christians comprise only 20% of the city. Why don't you direct your outrage to the Palestinian Authority?!!
As for your false allegations about Christians being kicked out of Jerusalem, this is simply untrue. 2/3 of Jerusalem is Jewish and 1/3 is Muslim. The Christians make up barely 2% of the city and most original families were kicked out by the Jordanians in 1948 when they captured the eastern part of the city. Furthermore, Israel does not have problems with its Christian population because the Christian Palestinians (unlike many of the Muslim Palestinians) don't support the use of suicide bombings and other acts of terrorism to settle disputes. Every suicide bomber has been a Muslim and not a Christian! In fact, the suburb Christian community of Beit Jala was infiltrated by Palestinian Muslim terrorists who used the territory to fire on the homes of Israeli residents of the town of Gilo. The Palestinian Christians publicly came out and condemned this terrorism. On the other hand, Palestinian Muslims have streets named after suicide bombers in Gaza and other cities. And if you want to blame someone for kicking Christians out of Jerusalem, you can blame the British. They kicked out the German Christians from the Templer movement (who built homes in the city in the 19th century) during World War II.
to 11.57.I dont believe that you know what you are talking about.Jordan kicked Christians out in 1948? tell us where did they kick them out to.if in Jordan hundreds of thousand of Christians who are Arabs by the way live.as for Christians not fighting the Israeli, this might be the funniest thing I read in your blog.two of the three Palestinian leaders who started the fight to liberate their country are Christian Naif Hawatmeh and George Habash, the third was Arafat who was a Muslim.
