Child Brides In Yemen
Ten-year-old Nujood Ali

-- By CNN's Paula Newton in Yemen, who will host the July edition of Inside the Middle East.

Two thirds of the population of the Middle East is under the age of 25. The profound consequences of that statistic just kind of hit you over the head. This really is a youthful region with a wealth of opportunity and promise still to come.

But a whole new generation of children must now decide how to accommodate the traditional wishes of their parents and still carve a path of their own.

In her very unique way Nujood Ali is doing just that. Ten year-old Nujood is every inch a child. And yet this shy girl with a slow and ready smile and a voice that betrays innocence has already been married and divorced. We met her in Yemen, a place where more than half of young women are married off by their families before the age of 18.

We’ve learned much about why that happens and why it is set to continue for years to come. But Nujood is one child bride who dared to speak out. You won’t forget her story and you can see it next month on the latest edition of Inside the Middle East coming to you from Yemen.

it's not just yemen alone that still practises these unspeakable violations againt the right of the child.Eygpt has been doing it and continues to do it.the question then becomes what can be done to at least affect a little bit of change in a custom that is widely practised all over the world?
surely u cant say women must stop giving birth and most of these girls are too scared to say no
It's really pitiful to see that such practices are still done in some area of the world in our era.

The liability lies 100% on the parents. they have been raised like that and they are raising their children in the same way.

To break this vicious circle isn't that easy. It should come through education and awareness. This can be done with the young generation in Yemen. But someone should take the leading role in that: foreign international organizations maybe.
My heart aches for these children. What will it take for men to realise the true worth of women,to treat women and children with love and respect? To nurture and care for their wives and children the way their own mother tried to care for them. When that day comes, surely the world will know peace.
The average age of marriage in Yemen's rural areas is 12 to 13, a recent study by San'a University researchers found. The country, at the southern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world.
