Before joining CNN, Roberts was with NBC affiliate WAVY-TV in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Va., market, where he anchored the 5 p.m. news and served as an investigative and consumer reporter. Before this position, he anchored the 6 p.m. and the 10 p.m. news programs in addition to fulfilling investigative and consumer reporting duties for the FOX affiliate WFTX-TV in Ft. Myers, Fla. Before that, Roberts was with ABC affiliate KLKN-TV in Lincoln, Neb., where he was a general assignment reporter. He started his news career at NBC San Diego affiliate KNSD-TV as a writer and field producer.

Roberts has received numerous honors and awards, including a 2002 Emmy nomination as well as the 2002 Virginia AP Award in the Documentary/In-Depth Category for "Parvo Puppies," an investigation into a local Virginia/North Carolina puppy mill which was eventually shut down due to Roberts' investigative report. In 2005, Jezebel magazine named him one of the "50 Most Beautiful Atlantans."
