Christian Purefoy was appointed CNN Internationals news correspondent in West Africa during the networks expansion of its African newsgathering team in 2008.
Based in Lagos, Nigeria, Purefoy has reported on Nigeria since 2004. He has been covering the oil-rich Niger Delta since the start of the armed militancy in 2004 and has been on the scene at the release of one of the first American hostages. He has reported from militant camps on the recent military offensive and government amnesty, and has profiled the devastating social and environmental impact of oil in the region.
From West Africa, Purefoy has reported on the Galamsey mines in Ghana, the rising cost of food crisis in Senegal and the famine that is spreading across Niger.
Purefoy began his career as a freelance journalist, writing for a variety of UK and US newspapers and publications including The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, San Francisco Chronicle, and Newsweek. He joined CNN in 2005, undertaking assignments as a producer, editor and cameraman on projects including extensive work on CNN Internationals Inside Africa programme. Today, Christian is an integral part of CNNs West Africa presence, where he continues to deliver news stories of global relevance from within the region.
Christian is from the United Kingdom and studied international politics and international history at Keele University.
