Jeanne Meserve is a Washington, D.C.-based correspondent for CNN, covering homeland security for the network. Meserve reports for CNN's Washington.-based America Bureau, a unit that combines the network's homeland security, Justice Department, and national security beats to examine the state of security in the United States.
Meserve was part of CNN's Peabody award-winning coverage of Hurricane Katrina, providing the first reports of devastating flooding in New Orleans. Judges for the 2005 David Bloom Award gave Meserve special recognition, saying her coverage revealed "extraordinary composure and compassion as well as her unwavering respect for the facts." Meserve also provided reports for two CNN Security Watch specials: "Is America Prepared? Lessons of Hurricane Katrina" and "Is America Prepared? The Next Disaster."
Covering homeland security since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Meserve has reported on security of the nation's ports, chemical plants, airports and borders. She has flown with a federal air marshal, accompanied a combat air patrol in an F-16 and stood atop a 13-story crane in the Port of Los Angeles.
Previously, Meserve was an anchor for CNN. She won a New York Festivals Gold Medal Award for her anchoring of the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin and an Emmy for her anchoring of the Centennial Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta in 1996. She also anchored CNN's award-winning coverage of the death of Princess Diana.
Meserve has covered many breaking news stories for the network. She was part of the CNN team that won an Edward R. Murrow award for reporting on the young Cuban boy, Elian Gonzales. One of CNN's lead reporters on the Beltway sniper, she broke the news of young Iran Brown's shooting. Among her scoops while covering the Elizabeth Smart case was the first interview with the father of Smart's abductor.
Meserve's political reporting has included coverage of the Lamar Alexander, Bill Bradley and Pat Buchanan campaigns, the 2000 election recount and floor reporting from the Democratic and Republican conventions in 1996 and 2000.
Before joining CNN, Meserve worked for ABC News where she spent three years as a State Department correspondent, reporting from China, Israel and other global hotspots. She has also worked in Richmond, Va.; Syracuse, N.Y.; and Bangor, Maine.
She earned a bachelor's degree from Middlebury College.
