Mike Hanna

Mike Hanna is CNN's Jerusalem bureau chief, appointed to this position in August 2000. Hanna supervises CNN's ongoing coverage of the dramatic events in the region.

Hanna has covered the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including the 2002 suicide bombings as well as the 2003 outbreak of violence as the George W. Bush administration pushed Israeli and Palestinian leaders toward its Middle East roadmap to peace.

Before taking up the position in Jerusalem, Hanna spent 18 months based in Frankfurt as a senior international correspondent. During this period, he reported on international breaking news from Central Europe, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Hanna was formerly CNN's Johannesburg bureau chief. With nearly 20 years of experience reporting from South Africa, Hanna was appointed bureau chief shortly before the country's first democratic elections in 1994. He was responsible for coordinating CNN's coverage of this historic event. In addition to covering the developments in South Africa, Hanna also has reported from the frontlines of conflict in Bosnia, Russia, Northern Ireland, Rwanda, Zaire, Somalia and the Persian Gulf.

Hanna was one of the first journalists to cover the massive exodus of refugees from Rwanda in 1994, and he has continued to follow the story, reporting on the refugees' return to the Great Lakes Region in 1996, the ongoing civil war in Zaire, the fall of President Joseph Mobutu and the entry of rebel forces into Kinshasa.

Hanna has received numerous awards for his work at CNN. In 1997, he won a CableACE Award and received a Bayeux War Correspondents Award for his coverage of Zaire. In 1995, he won the prestigious Edward Weintal Prize for Diplomatic Reporting with colleague Christiane Amanpour, and in 1994, he received an award from the New York Association of Black Journalists.

Before joining CNN, Hanna was the Southern African Correspondent for ITN's Channel 4 News, reporting extensively from South Africa and its neighboring states throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. He was a member of the Channel 4 production team that won four British Academy Awards for Best News Coverage, as well as several Royal Television Society (RTS) awards. Also, his reports have been screened at television festivals in Edinburgh, London, Monte Carlo and New York.

Hanna began his career in journalism at the South African Broadcasting Corp. He then became news editor at the country's first independent radio station, Capital Radio, and subsequently worked as a correspondent for National Public Radio, Canadian Broadcasting Corp., Independent Radio News and the Australian Broadcasting Commission.

Hanna earned a bachelor's degree from the University of the Witwatersrand.
