216 drinks a weekLacking insurance, Megan could not afford to check into traditional treatment centers. But her cousin Sterling found out that the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston needed volunteers for a clinical trial on alcoholism called Combine that is funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Megan qualified and moved to Charleston.
On her initial meeting with a counselor, Megan found out that she was drinking 216 standard drinks per week. "I couldn't believe it. I was like there must be some mistake," she said.
