216 drinks a week

Lacking insurance, Megan could not afford to check into traditional treatment centers. But her cousin Sterling found out that the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston needed volunteers for a clinical trial on alcoholism called Combine that is funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Megan qualified and moved to Charleston.

On her initial meeting with a counselor, Megan found out that she was drinking 216 standard drinks per week. "I couldn't believe it. I was like there must be some mistake," she said. Play video >>
