With youth sports becoming more competitive, including longer seasons and extra practices, doctors say they are seeing more overuse injuries like Little League elbow and gymnast's back. All of these were almost unheard of in children 20 years ago, says Dr. Aurelia Nattiv, the team physician for UCLA's gymnastic team.

"Instead of free play that we used to see when we were younger, ... we're seeing young kids that are exercising, you know, from four to six hours a day, five to six days a week," she says. "And so we're seeing a lot more problems with burnout, with overuse injuries."
