Between flights: From landing to the next launch


Kennedy Space Center, which covers 140,000 acres on Florida's east coast, is the nexus of space shuttle life in the United States. The space center is like an exclusive neighborhood, ringed by fences and patrolled for trespassers. Inside, hangars, offices, labs and workshops make up NASA's giant nest for the four space-explorer birds: Atlantis, Columbia, Endeavour and Discovery.
