On the first day of the Stennis' deployment, a flag found in the rubble of the World Trade Center was unfurled and flown high on the ship's mast. The commanding officer of the Stennis, Capt. James McDonell, said the ceremony to raise the flag gave the crew "time to really reflect the reason that we deployed early, and what we are really all about for this deployment."
