Former staff sergeant in the Oregon National guard Luke Wilson was ambushed driving in a convoy on his second day in combat in Iraq. A rocket-propelled grenade went through his calf, but he continued to fight. His leg was later amputated and he spent a year in therapy at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. To honor his fellow soldiers lost in the attack that cost him his leg, Wilson became involved in building a memorial in Salem, Oregon.
