WHO IS DAVID MILIBAND?
WHO IS DAVID MILIBAND?

David Miliband, MP, is currently Britain's Foreign Secretary. He is the youngest person to hold the position in 30 years. He is considered to be to the left of Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He is an advocate for more environmental action, higher public spending, and a more Pro-European foreign policy.

Many speculate that he will be Britain's next Labor Party leader and could even be the next Prime Minister.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING...
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING...

What is making headlines in newspapers all over the world this week?

President Zelaya of Honduras was recently ousted in an illegal military coup after trying to hold a referendum to unconstitutionally extend his term of office. In protest, the Organization of American States has thrown Honduras out of the OAS. Though President Obama backs the reinstatement of Zelaya as the democratic leader of Honduras, many do not.

After Zelaya's failed attempt to return this Sunday set off deadly demonstrations outside Honduras's main airport, media organizations were analyzing the backdrop to the ousted President's attempt to return.

Here's a sample of what newspapers around the world are reporting:

"Honduras holds breath over Manuel Zelaya's homecoming pledge"
The Guardian,
U.K.

"Nicaragua denounces military plot in Honduras"
Tico Times, San Jose, Costa Rica

"Honduras coup is just the tip of the iceburg, who is next?"
Guatemala Times, Guatemala

"Honduras bars return of ousted president"
Xinhua
, China

"China new Latin bad boy, replacing the US"
Bloomberg News via Business Standard, India

"The coup in Honduras: Can Obama's promising start in the Americas be sustained?"
The Gleaner, Kingston, Jamaica

"Exiled Honduras President Announces Imminent Departure for Honduras to Reclaim Post"
Latin American Herald Tribune, Caracas, Venezuala

"Millionaire aid for Honduras"
El Universal,
Caracas, Venezuala

GPS READING BLOG

Check out some books and articles that Fareed and his guests are reading this week:

BOOK OF THE WEEK

The Geopolitics of Emotion: How Fear, Humiliation and Hope are Reshaping the World by Dominique Moisi

Moisi argues that three human emotions are key factors in the world's political conflicts: Asia is full of hope, the Muslim world is beset by humiliation, and the West is ruled by fear. The subtitle gives you an idea of what it's about but what it doesn't give you an idea of is just how GOOD this book is.

OUR GUESTS RECOMMEND...
Tony Blair
Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources by Martin Lings. In Muhammad, Lings describes the life of the prophet through original sources. "He tells the story in an interesting way. A friend of mine once said that you cannot understand the Qur'an unless you have read this book."

Paul Krugman
The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt by T.J. Stiles. Stiles offers a biography of the titan, Cornelius Vanderbilt, who rose from builder of the nation's largest fleet of steamships to lord of a railroad empire.

John B. Taylor
Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World by Liaquat Ahamed. Lords of Finance tells the story of four bankers' experiences during the 1929 Great Depression. "It is great and a wonderful history."
