TERROR IN MUMBAI

Almost one year ago today, ten young Pakistani men unleashed coordinated attacks across the city of Mumbai that left at least 170 people dead and more than 300 wounded, sending shockwaves of fear around the world. Terror in Mumbai provides a 360-degree view of a terrorist act, recounting in harrowing detail the bloody events of that 60-hour period through interviews with survivors and Indian police officials, archival news coverage, extensive video surveillance footage of the terrorists in action, and chilling audio excerpts of cell-phone conversations intercepted by security forces. The phone intercepts provide a grotesque running commentary as the controllers, watching events unfold on live TV, direct the gunmen to fight to the death and not allow themselves to be taken alive. The film airs on HBO on Thursday November 19th.

With Hamid Karzai confirmed as president by the Independent Electoral Commission, many with stakes in Afghanistan, from the U.S. to the UN, publicly called for Karzai to reduce the corruption in his administration. Five UK troops were killed by an Afghan recently and now NATO and the U.S. propose to move British troops "out of harms way" until the UK general election. Following the Taliban's killing of five UN electoral assistance staffers, the UN reacted by moving hundreds of other staff out of the country, or into more secure facilities in Kabul.

BRIEFING BOOK WATCH HERE		BOOK OF THE WEEK One Nation Under Contract: The Outsourcing of American Power and the Future of Foreign Policy by Alison Stanger The book is about military contractors and just how big a role they play in US defense, policy and security. In Afghanistan, government figures indicate that 57 per cent of Defense personnel are contractors -- and in Iraq, 48 per cent. Stanger argues that these are modern day mercenaries, essentially operating for their own benefit in the midst of deadly conflicts. It is a fascinating book.
