WHAT THEY'RE SAYING 12-13

With no legally binding deal being discussed so far at the Copenhagen climate change talks, and nearly one thousand protesters arrested outside the conference center, world media speculate what may or may not be accomplished. The day after the protests, the Australian government and press declared that the talks were not on track to a solution. China, meanwhile, said they were at a "critical stage." Poorer countries and their advocates, particularly in Africa, dismissed the pre-arranged $10 billion commitment for adaptation funding as too low, and accused the developed countries of "carbon colonialism." Here is a sample of what they're saying around the world:
"Copenhagen Summit: wealthy nations accused of 'carbon colonialism,'" Times of London (UK)
"Chinese negotiator: Climate talks entering 'crucial stage,'" Xinhua (China)
"Copenhagen 'not on track to save planet,'" Sidney Morning Herald (Australia)
"Canada balks at climate plan," Toronto Star (Canada)

BOOK OF THE WEEK
BOOK OF THE WEEK

Superfreakonomics by Steven Dubner and Steven Levitt.

The book is a sequel to these economists' huge best-seller, Freakonomics, or what publicists are calling it, a "FREAK-quel." It is more on the same fascinating idea that made the first book sell so well: when you see irrational behavior, you need only to understand the incentives that led to the behavior to make sense of the behavior. The authors use their counterintuitive approach to explain everything from prostitution to children's car seats -- though Fareed does not always agree with them, they make wonderfully entertaining arguments.
