The U.S. economy and markets -- the Davos View

The urgency here is palpable.

If there was ever a need to have an intelligent truly global debate, it is now.

The issues here are pressing and real-time. Attendees from outside the U.S. are feeling penalized and there is real concern that the U.S. doesn't have the leadership to respond properly and that it may become overly political given the ongoing campaign.

Will protectionism and xenophobia rule the day?

I really don't think that it matters who is leading our nation. The economy is what it is and nothing anyone can do will help it IMO. I think it's too little too late! I guess we will all have to just go with the flow and ride it out. Hopefully it won't get too bad!

I think we should put high tariffs on imported goods, esp. those coming from China. They put high tariffs on us for the goods we export, and since they're making so much money off us, let's help our own economy instead.

The operative word here is "intelligent". Everyone is out for their own best interests and no one will give an inch, not even to save the world as we used to know it.

While it's true a Presidential administration can't entirely control economic trends, they do have an influence, and our current administration has proven itself to lack in leadership on world issues.

Right now, we need a President who can bring the world together, not drive it apart as Bush has done.

Well, we know the current administration doesn't care about the rest of the world - just look at how they would not cooperate with the rest of the globe on the Kyoto Protocol. And the candidates having an intelligent conversation on this and doing the best thing for not only the nation but the other nations as well - not much hope in this since all they can manage to do lately is call each other names.

We call ourselves the greatest country in the world but we act like a two year old. The other nations are right to worry; our current government suffers from near-sightedness and the candidates are blind to anything that doesn't directly impinge on their campaigns.

I think protectionism and xenophobia are givens on this one as well as stupidity.

The wealthest Nation in the world, Its frightning to think of it as such when the economy is like riding a seasaw, Will the next Presedent of the United States please eliminate the seasaw and erect a mary go round? Were every body rids!!

They should feel penalized. Penalized for deflating their currencies for the past 2 decades in order to sell their products cheaper, they should feel penalized for lack of leadership, since it was their own country(s) leadership for not trying to bring their currencies in parity with ours. The dollar is weaker, finally, what we have been trying to achieve over the past 2 decades. I guess all the jobs we shipped overseas will soon be coming back home?
