Fire on the campaign trail. And I mean fire.

Candy Crowley
Senior Political Correspondent

Editor's note: Candy filed her story for 360 tonight from a van outside her hotel in Irmo, South Carolina, a suburb of Columbia, because there was a fire in her hotel. Afterward, she filed this brief follow-up:

It is weirdly quiet here now at Hotel Disaster.

The good news is the fire trucks are gone.

The bad news: fire and flood restoration services is here.

The elevators are down and the power might go off in the rooms.

Otherwise, we are having a great time.

Hi Candy,
You truly are a trailblazer...I always like to read your posts.
Did the Hotel at least give you a free mint on your pillow?
Good work.

Candy you face some of the most challenging conditions to get the story. It sounds like no one got harmed in the fire, so Im glad for that. It also sounds as if you will get little to no sleep until you're due to go on the air. Stay safe and warm and just keep thinking of how much you'll enjoy plopping into bed when you are "off duty".

You thought nothing could get your focus off the big day for South Carolina on Saturday, but looks like fate had other plans. Sorry to hear about the scare. Look forward to being glued to CNN Friday and Saturday for the big showdown!

Thank you for checking into the blog - how frightening for you and the other guests. I bet that hotel was fully booked for this week. Your reaction sounds very calm. Maybe tomorrow you'll be back in the mood to delve right into politics again, but for now have a cup of tea and take a deep breath and praise the Lord that all turned out well.

Candy,

Glad you were not in the fire. I have a comment and I don't know where to go. I have been trying to project a winner using the delegate counts from each state coming up on Super Tuesday and using different scenarios I keep coming up with one conclusion that there will be no winner after Super Tuesday on the Democratic side. One would have to get 82% of all the delegates on Super Tuesday to win. The Democrats hand out their delegates proportionally so unless their is some shocking news about either Clinton or Obama I see neither candidate coming nowhere near 82% of the delegates. I would be surpised if either came close to 60% of the delegates. I don't see John Edwards getting enough votes to hand a win to either candidate either. I wonder has CNN and the campaigns or for that matter the democratic party done the math. Unless there was a true front runner after New Hampshire, there was not going to be a winner after Super Tuesday. Also I don't think CNN or any news outlet has really explained this to the American people yet. Is there some lower number than 2025 that would get the candidate a win after Super Tuesday? Is there something I am missing? An answer from the media about this would be nice before Super Tuesday. Thanks

Oh Ms . Crowley you poor thing. I bet you were planning on the crazy Presidential race keeping you up all hours-- not a fire ! Let me reassure you that the viewers are proud of you for going around the country during this whole election cycle and for sticking with it. I would love to read about your stories fromthe road someday in a book. I assume you're getting a free room out of this deal?!

Hi Candy

I'm so glad you weren't hurt in the fire. Sounds like the clean up may be worse than the actual fire itself. Your sense of humor seems intact though - I admire the way you can see everything positively. That's a great gift.

Everyone talks about how grueling it is on the candidates on the campaign trail but it seems to me its just as bad if not worse on the reporters. At least the candidates get A-one class accommodations, etc.

Hang in there! Hope you don't have to work by candlelight.

Never a dull moment, huh, Candy? And you thought politics is the only "hot news" these days. I guess when you're a traveling journalist, you have to be prepared for anything, including hotel fires! Kudos to you for being cool, calm, and collected, in spite of it all!

So, where's the GLAMOUR? The GLITZ? The GLORY? Being a flight attendant, I have myriads of questions about my "exciting, far-flung" life -- as I'm sure you do. And it is a lot of fun....but I'm still looking (as I'm sure you are) for the GLAMOUR, GLITZ, and the GLORY. Let me know if you find it. I need some.

Candy:

Glad you are well and safe and thanks for your post! I travel frequently and often alone for business. I always have a flashlight in my suitcase and always request a floor at 5 or below. I even put my purse and my sneakers at the door with my flashlight.

I showed my husband your post. He promised to stop laughing and poking fun of me.

Thanks again and hope to see you in Florida!

So, when the fire broke out, where were you? Happened to me once - but I was in the shower in my room. Figured it was safer to stay there than race out in a towel. Luckily for us, it was a false alarm. Glad to know you made it out safely.
