Still Waiting for Hurricane Rita Relief

SABINE PASS, Texas (CNN) -- Christmas will be anything but merry this year for Helena Saunders. The 69-year-old grandmother, who's been living inside of a cramped FEMA trailer since her home in Sabine Pass, Texas, was devastated more than two years ago by Hurricane Rita, says there isn't enough room for a Christmas tree.

Hurricane Rita slammed into the Texas and Louisiana coast on September 24, 2005, destroying thousands of properties and causing an estimated $9.4 billion in damages -- making it the ninth costliest storm in U.S. history, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

After every disaster, hurricane, flood, fire, earthquake etc. the aftermath is usually forgotten by the media. It's been like this for years. Perhaps we'd do more of a service to victims of disasters by donating money and our attention less to the live tv event and more to what's needed down the road. That does appear to be where we all fall short on helping our fellow neighbors.
We tend to drop like a hot potato every victim of a disaster and rush onward to the next big episode of misfortune.

rebuilding after disasters SHOULD be helped along by private donations from Americans. We're the most generous people on earth. If every person who will go to a movie this weekend with their children, instead donated $50 to relief, we'd quickly raise tens of millions of dollars. THAT'S America helping Americans -- NOT forcing tax money out of people to be filtered through Washington. It doesn't make sense to collect tax money from people, send it ALL the way to Washington, have Washington count it all up, then send it ALL the way back to the Gulf Coast.

It would have been nice to have the complete story instead of just CNN part of the story. FEMA and The State of Texas has issued in grants for housing, rental assistance and personal property thru the Individual and Household Program Millions of dollars to Hurricane Rita victims. The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs Home funds are additional grant funds additional to what was already issued. The statement that hurricane Rita victims have not received any assistance is not true. But CNN don't want to talk about the good things that have been done to help the Hurricane Rita victims.
