'Honor killing' arrests
Tonight on "360," we'll look at the global reality of honor killings. Why do these murders happen? What can be done to stop them?

That video is gruesome and infuriating.

At my most cynical, I sometimes think the only way to restore any power to women in some parts of the world is to issue every one of them a gun.

Re blogger Arachnae's comment:

Im not a big gun advocate, but your comment just makes it even more clear that women in the lower economic strata of Iraq not only can't protect themselves with firearms , but are oppressed from other things. To name a few, they can't hold office, go without the scarf, wear make up or marry for love. That's sad.

Anderson,

Barbaric, horrific ,and pure evil, blow by blow on this innocent child, those responsible should be put to death.

"Honor killing" there were no honorable men present at the senseless slaughter of a beautiful teenage girl. An Honorable man would have never stood by and watched, let alone recorded, the horrific murder of an innocent.
All the men present and condoning such practices should be called what they are, brutal, evil, voyeuristic murderers.Until women are treated as equal human beings, there will be no honorable men in those countries that allow such dispicable acts to happen.

Other than for ratings grabbing or for more "eyes" on your website, what is the rationale of showing the attack on this girl? I did not watch it because I cannot, as a human being, voluntarily watch another human being's death. Perhaps CNN doesn't show this poor girl actually dying, but does it REALLY serve the public interest to show any part of the attack? Most of us know what "honor killings" are, and I hope I am not alone in my disgust and distaste at CNN's once again showing something so disturbing.

For Susan Saini in Seattle, as well as others:

Showing this video is necessary to bring home the horror of such a terrible act. How often have stories of the mass slaughters in Darfur been run, with no resultant aid? But add video footage, and like magic, people take notice and begin to act on the situation.

It is perhaps illustrative of the disconnect between American culture and the rest of the world that it takes photos or moving images to galvanize the U.S. populace into action. As much as you may disapprove of CNN's carrying the footage of this atrocious act, can you honestly say there would be as much expression of public outrage, had there been no footage? I think not.

To Susan, who asks: "what is the rationale of showing the attack on this girl?"

Susan, without images, the story might as well not have been told.

Don't believe me? Okay, when did the Abu Ghraib story break? with the photos, right? Wrong - the abuses of prisoners at Abu Ghraib had been known about, and reported about in the media, for quite some time before the New Yorker published those hideous photographs. Don't remember that, do you? Nor does anyone else. It only BECAME an outrage when people actually saw it.

You might better ask, why are we, as human beings, ONLY moved by things we actually see?

In response to Judy's statement: "Until women are treated as equal human beings, there will be no honorable men in those countries that allow such dispicable acts to happen."

This type of violence and abuse does not just happen in "those countries". Violence against women is a global epidemic and we all need to recognize that honor killings that happen "over there" are not far removed from the abuse of women in our own country and other "first world, developed" nations. Overall there is not enough movement/action by people to eradicate all rape, sexual violence and woman abuse. This is an issue that affects ALL of us.
