Strangers: We want Hokie gear

I was shopping in Target in Virginia when a nice man came up to me and randomly asked if I knew the colors for Virginia Tech. He and his wife were buying clothes for their daughter to wear to school tomorrow because her class was wearing Tech's colors in honor of those killed.

I helped them out, and the couple proudly bought burnt orange and Chicago maroon clothes for their daughter -- happy to help her mark the day for the fallen students and professors. It was another moving example of how this tragedy has touched so many people.

I was just shopping at a Walmart in Yorktown, VA and was totally in awe of the customers scouring the shelves for any VT gear (didn't see any) and clothes in orange and maroon. Even the staff had collected piles of orange shirts to make it easier for the shoppers. There should be a sea of Tech colors here tomorrow.

I am a Junior at the University of Vermont, and even all the way up here I bought a Virginia Tech shirt online in their online store. I only hope it comes early tomorrow for the Maroon and Orange Effect Day in support for all the victims of Monday.

When looking for a motive;his videos show that he was identifying with many populations, thru virtually centuries. In the comments he made; you do not know how it feels to be torched, or have your throat slit, etc...he didn't either..BUT, I think he put the face of the victims of atrocities,both current and past, over his pain, like a mask on a face. And once he had done that "identification"; it gave him the impetus to act out his rage.

Perhaps the powers that be can arrange a site where people can buy VT items with profits going toward a memorial. Even something as simple as a Peace Garden where people can walk, sit, contemplate or pray as they wish. More fitting and productive would be a counseling center where students would be encouraged to go and seek help, a place for their pain and fears to be heard and healed. A living memorial would be for everyone to decide to get to know the person they encounter who needs a friend, needs to "belong", to feel they are not invisible. Smile to those you encounter, give an act of kindness as it may be the only smile or kindness they receive that day. Don't let people be lonely in a crowded world. Be the one to befriend them, to see their worthiness. Do what you can and much will be accomplished. Be Human!
