DECEMBER 24, 1999 VOL. 25 NO. 51 Monitor Holier Than Thou According to the global Gallup International Millennium Survey, almost two-thirds of its respondents say God is very important in their personal lives. In West Africa - where Muslims are the largest and most observant group and where the Catholic Church has made significant inroads over recent years - 99% of those who responded are believers. Southeast Asians are the least likely to be joiners - only 77% said they belong to a religious denomination. Globally, 75% of the respondents either feel there is an actual God or a spirit or God-like force.
