Foreign Investment on the Rise

Global foreign direct investment (FDI) for 1999 was $827 billion, about 25% more than in 1998. Cross-border mergers and acquisitions drove that growth and will for 2000, too. For developing Asia, FDI inflows remained fairly static at around $91 billion for the last two years. But Japan's economic liberalization encouraged foreign inflow by almost a factor of five, from $3 billion in 1998 to $14 billion in 1999. For the first time since 1988 the U.K. surpassed the U.S. in leading the world in terms of how much money left the country for overseas investments.
