A NEW TACK

Nepal's ousted communist party filed an unprecedented motion to impeach two Supreme Court judges. The Court had decided Aug. 28 that the communists' dissolution of Parliament in June was unconstitutional. The communists have a minority in Parliament after losing power in a no-confidence vote Sept. 10. Impeachment requires a two-thirds majority.


Week of September 8, 1995

JUDICIAL REVOLT

Nepal's Supreme Court overturned PM Manmohan Adhikari's June 13 decision to disband parliament and call elections - after a no-confidence motion he refused to face. The court said the PM's actions were unconstitutional and reinstated the legislature. Parliament is expected to dissolve the communist minority government and install a center-right coalition within days.


Week of June 30, 1995

FLOODING

Flash floods and landslides claimed dozens of lives in eastern Nepal and northern Bangladesh. In Nepal, the dead and missing numbered more than 100. Torrential rains hurt relief efforts. In Bangladesh, at least 52 people died, though more than a million were marooned. Floods caused widespread crop and property damage. More than 50 flood relief centers opened.
