Bush adds Giuliani's endorsement to long list

NEW YORK (CNN) -- New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani endorsed Texas Gov. George W. Bush Friday for the Republican nomination for president.

"Governor, you're a winner like the Yankees," Giuliani told Bush via a telephone hookup. Giuliani said there were many good candidates Republican candidates, "but Bush is the best."

Bush thanked Giuliani, saying he was proud to have the mayor's endorsement.

Giuliani said that rank and file Republicans "are united and determined to win" so that "this Clinton thing won't continue."

That was a double reference -- both to Democratic front-runner Vice President Al Gore and to Hillary Rodham Clinton, Giuliani's likely Democratic opponent next year for the U.S. Senate seat in New York. That seat is being vacated by retiring Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

Giuliani joins a long list of party leaders and elected officials who have endorsed Bush. The governor's presidential campaign has announced new endorsements on a near-daily basis, concentrating recently on top state officials and groups of state legislators.

The news also comes a day after Bush announced another round of record-setting fund-raising totals. His campaign now has raised a staggering $56 million.

In contrast, the GOP nominee of four years ago, former Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas, raised $30 million during the entire primary campaign -- and that also was a record.
