Bauer lashes out at 'vicious' adultery rumor

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer lashed out Wednesday at "vicious allegations" that he has been having an adulterous affair with a woman on his campaign staff.

"I wanted to hold this press conference to say unambiguously that my wife and I have been faithfully married for 27 years," Bauer said.

Gary Bauer
Gary Bauer held a news conference Wednesday to strongly deny a rumor about a alleged adulterous affair

Bauer said he believed the story was being disseminated by a rival presidential campaign which he did not name.

"The core idea of this rumor campaign is that I have violated the vows that I made to my wife 27 years ago," Bauer said.

"These rumors and character assassination are disgusting, outrageous, evil, and sick. They are trash can politics at its worst," Bauer said, who was joined at the podium by his wife and family.

The rumors, which Bauer said have been around "for some time," resurfaced recently in the New York Daily News in a gossip item that read: "What presidential candidate is praying that a former secretary doesn't go public with her claim that he's been having an affair with a twentysomething woman?"

Bauer also denied a rumor that his former campaign chairman Charles Jarvis quit because of the alleged affair. Jarvis recently joined the presidential campaign of millionaire publisher Steve Forbes.

But Jarvis told CNN that Bauer's relationship with a young female staffer was one of the reasons he left.

"In a post Clinton-Lewinsky world, people are very disturbed by even the appearance of impropriety and consequently, there were staff members who were deeply concerned about what they thought of as behavior that a pro-family, pro-life Reagan conservative should avoid at all costs, even the appearance of it," Jarvis said.

Jarvis never directly accused Bauer of an affair, but said Bauer's lengthy, closed-door meetings with the young woman created an appearance of an impropriety and caused a serious morale problem among the campaign's staff.

Bauer campaign manager Frank Cannon said Jarvis was speaking on behalf of the Forbes campaign. "Gary's relationship with all his staff is totally professional," Cannon said.

Forbes spokesman Greg Mueller denied any involvement in spreading the rumors. "It's a family fight that we don't want to be involved in. We're not involved in this in any way, shape or form. We don't engage in that kind of activity. Charlie [Jarvis] left because he knows Forbes can win."
