McCain: Buchanan has already abandoned GOP

CHICAGO (CNN) -- GOP presidential hopeful John McCain says that because of the controversial views on America's involvement in World Wars I and II he espouses in his new book, Pat Buchanan has already left the Republican party.

Buchanan, who also is seeking the GOP presidential nomination, has been mulling a jump to the Reform Party.

In his new book, "A Republic, Not An Empire," Buchanan suggests the United States had no vital national role in either world war and Germany should have been left to dominate Europe and take on Stalin and the communist forces in Russia.

On a tour promoting his own book, "Faith of Our Fahers," the Arizona senator plans to make the following statement about Buchanan:

"It is evident to me by Pat Buchanan's own rhetoric that he has left the Republican Party.

"Defeating Hitler's Germany and Tojo's Japan was a very noble cause. And I wouldn't want any Republican to ever think otherwise or any American for that matter.

"I am fully aware of the political implications of a Buchanan third party candidacy. But regardless of what the polls show, our party must stand on principle."
