McCain kicks off book tour to promote new memoir
September 9, 1999 NEW YORK (CNN) -- GOP presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain of Arizona kicked off a two-week book tour Wednesday to promote his new memoir, "Faith Of My Fathers," a book about three generations of McCain Navy men. A Park Avenue reception hosted by Henry Kissinger, Georgette Mosbacher, and investment wizard Michael Bloomberg served as the backdrop for the kick-off celebration. McCain, who was joined by his wife Cindy, spoke briefly at the event about the book. He also said he believes momentum for his presidential candidacy may build this fall. McCain graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958, became a naval aviator and went on to serve a 22-year navy career. In 1967 his plane was shot down over North Vietnam and he spent more than five years as a prisoner of war, before being releases in 1973. McCain has received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. The Arizona senator's father, John S. McCain Jr., and grandfather, John S. McCain Sr., were both Navy admirals. |
