Poll: Support for stricter gun control remains strong

WASHINGTON (July 30) -- Six in 10 Americans favor stricter gun control laws in general, according to a newly released CNN/TIME poll. Three-quarters of those questioned favor federal laws mandating the registration of all handguns or the licensing of all handgun owners.

The poll also indicates women are far more likely to support stricter gun control than are men.

Previous CNN polls have shown that Americans do not support making all handguns illegal, but they do support proposals that fall short of a total ban, including several proposals that Congress is currently considering.

At least seven in 10 respondents support restricting the possession of semi-automatic weapons by minors, mandating child safety devices for all handguns sold by licensed dealers, and banning the importation of high-capacity ammunition clips.

Yet, the support for stricter gun control laws is down significantly from a high set in 1993. Also a majority of those questioned do not think the National Rifle Association has too much influence over gun control laws, as some Democratic lawmakers have charged.

Although all of the 1,017 interviews for the poll were conducted on July 14-15, well before the shooting in Atlanta, it is worth noting that polls taken before and after the Columbine shooting, which left 15 dead in Littleton, Colorado, did not show a significant shift in the public's opinion on gun control.

The polls has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points unless otherwise noted.
