Sources: Kasich to drop out of GOP nomination race

Plans to endorse Bush

MIAMI BEACH, Florida (July 13) -- Several Republican sources tell CNN that Rep. John Kasich of Ohio plans to abandon his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000 and endorse Texas Gov. George Bush.

The announcement will be made Wednesday, according to these sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Two top Kasich aides declined comment, except to say Kasich planned a major announcement on Wednesday.

Kasich -- always a longshot -- has struggled to attract attention, in large part because of the overwhelming early attention focused on Bush, and the Texan's overwhelming fund-raising edge.

Kasich has struggled to raise money and has kept his campaign afloat by transferring money from his House campaign committee. Kasich is nine-term congressman from Columbus, Ohio, and chairman of the powerful House Budget Committee.

In the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll, Kasich drew just 3 percent of likely Republican voters.

Kasich raised only about $3 million so far this year, including $1.4 million transferred from his House campaign fund -- a mere fraction of Bush's $36 million.

The GOP sources said Kasich would announce he was ending his presidential campaign first in Columbus; then later at a Washington, D.C., event at which GOP sources said they anticipated Bush would attend to accept the endorsement.
