Judge halves community service sentence for Whitewater figure
July 8, 1999 LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (AllPolitics, July 8) -- A U.S. district judge has halved the community service sentence of a lawyer who helped former Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker arrange a sham bankruptcy for profit. John Haley pleaded guilty in 1998 to a misdemeanor for his role as Tucker's lawyer in a $13 million cable television deal in the 1980s. Government prosecutors claimed Tucker, Haley and a third person set up a sham bankruptcy to avoid taxes in the deal, uncovered as part of Independent Counsel Ken Starr's investigation into President Bill Clinton's Whitewater financial dealings. Haley was sentenced to three years' probation, during which he was to perform eight hours of community service work per week -- a total of more than 1,200 hours. U.S. District Judge Stephen Reasoner on Wednesday cut that to 600 hours. Haley's attorney said Haley had already served 590 hours at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock. |
