Gore grandchild born on the Fourth of July

July 5, 1999
Web posted at: 11:58 a.m. EDT (1558 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, July 5) -- Good political instincts apparently run in the family as Vice President Gore became a grandfather for the first time on the Fourth of July.

Karenna Gore Schiff, the eldest child of Gore and his wife Tipper, gave birth to Wyatt Gore Schiff at 10:05 a.m. Sunday in New York City. As the grandson of a vice president and great-grandson of a former U.S. senator from Tennessee, Wyatt will share his birthday with that of the nation.

The baby, the first grandchild for the Gores, was expected in June but apparently Wyatt was already aware of his political lineage and waited until Independence Day to come into the world.

Wyatt weighed in at 6 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 20 inches long. His 25-year-old mother is a law school student at Columbia University. His father is Dr. Drew Schiff, a 33-year-old physician.

The Gores were in New York to be with their new grandson and his parents.

CNN's Chris Black contributed to this report.
