PHILADELPHIA (AllPolitics, July 1) -- Philadelphia's First Union Center will serve as the host venue for the 2000 Republican National Convention, party officials said Thursday.

The city already had been chosen as the host for the convention but the venue had not been announced. "Next summer our party and nominee will again make history in Philadelphia and tell the American people why Republican leadership is the best choice for the new century," Republican National Committee Chairman Jim Nicholson said at a news conference Thursday.

The site was chosen over other potential Philadelphia venues, including the city's convention center. "Our goal is how best to use both the First Union Center and the Pennsylvania Convention Center to make the convention a success for our nominee and the Philadelphia region," Nicholson said. The convention center may be used for committee meetings, delegate gatherings and other events, he said.

The convention will take place from July 29 to August 4, 2000.

Party officials said the First Union Center was chosen in part because of its available lighting, sound and broadcast technology and large amount of parking. The center, which opened in 1996, is the home of the Philadelphia Flyers professional hockey team and the Philadelphia '76ers professional basketball team.
