WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sources tell CNN a federal judge has ordered
Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr to give Maryland prosecutors tapes Linda
Tripp made of her conversations with Monica Lewinsky -- tapes prosecutors
contend she made without permission and, therefore, illegally.
The court order is under seal, but the release of the tapes will remove a
major impediment to the prosecution of Tripp on wiretapping charges.
The order came after a request from State Prosecutor Stephen Montanarelli,
who is pursuing the case against Tripp.
Tripp taped many of her phone conversations with Lewinsky from her home in
Maryland in late 1997. To make the case against Tripp, prosecutors have to
prove she knew that taping phone calls without the consent of all parties
involved is illegal in Maryland. Last year, a Radio Shack employee testified he
warned Tripp about Maryland's wiretapping law when she bought the taping device.
