FRANKFORT, Kentucky (AllPolitics, May 26) -- A little-known publicist named Peppy Martin edged a former Democrat Tuesday to win Kentucky's Republican gubernatorial nomination and will face heavily favored incumbent Gov. Paul Patton in the general election.
Patton is seeking an unprecendent second consecutive term as governor of Kentucky. The state constitution was changed in 1992 to allow succession, which had been banned in Kentucky for nearly 200 years.
Patton was the sole candidate in the Democratic primary.
With 98 percent of precincts reporting in the GOP race, Martin had 19,173 votes, or 51 percent. David L. Williams, who ran for the Senate as a Democrat in 1998, had 18,185 votes, or 49 percent.
Martin spent just $10,000 on her campaign and Williams spent next to nothing. Democrats vastly outnumber Republicans in the Bluegrass state and Patton is heavily favored to win re- election in November.
Williams declined interviews and had the telephone in his trailer home disconnected. He lives with his running-mate wife, Joanna, a candidate for lieutenant governor.
Also Tuesday, Jonathan Miller, a former member of Vice President Al Gore's staff, won the Democratic nomination for state treasurer. Miller spent nearly $500,000 on the race, about 10 times his rival's total.
