Poll: New Hampshire voters support Bush over Gore

May 5, 1999
Web posted at: 6:03 p.m. EDT (2203 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, May 5) -- Echoing national polls, voters in New Hampshire support Vice President Al Gore (D) and Texas Gov. George W. Bush (R) for the nomination of their individual parties, according a special poll conducted by CNN and WMUR-TV of Manchester, New Hampshire.

But either way, New Hampshire is leaning toward putting a Republican in the White House, as the poll shows that either of the survey's top two GOP hopefuls would beat either of the two Democratic candidate in hypothetical match-ups.

Overall, the poll show Elizabeth Dole in second place among New Hampshire's Republican voters with 16 percent, but she is still well behind front-runner Bush who lead by 37 percent.

The poll showed that Bush leads among both men and women, but among male voters only, Sen. John McCain comes in second -- pushing Dole to third. But McCain gets only 6 percent of the vote among GOP women to Dole's 24 percent.

Gore leads former Senator Bill Bradley by a nearly three-to-one margin with the vice president earning 67 percent of the New Hampshire Democratic vote. The numbers for Democrats nationwide are about the same.

And if the general election were held today? Both Bush and Dole would beat Gore or Bradley.

In head-to-head match-ups, Bush beats Gore by 20 percentage points -- 55 percent to 35 percent. Dole fares nearly as well, earning 52 percent against the vice president's 36 percent.

Bradley wouldn't do any better. The Texas governor again comes out on top, earning 52 percent against Bradley's 30 percent.

The poll questioned 710 registered voters in New Hampshire and was conducted April 24-May 2, 1999 by the University of New Hampshire.

Those surveyed included 279 voters who say they will vote in the Republican primary in 2000 and 202 voters who say they will vote in the Democratic primary in 2000. The margin of sampling error is indicated with each question below.
