WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, April 16) -- CNN has learned that former Democratic Party fund-raiser Johnny Chung will testify in front of the full House Government Reform Committee on April 27 and 28, according to a committee source.

On April 7, the committee requested approval from the Justice Department to speak to Chung regarding his illegal fund raising and his links to Chinese military intelligence. The Justice Department has approved this request and has placed no limitations on his testimony.

It is expected that Chung will be extensively questioned on his fund-raising efforts for various Democratic candidates, specifically President Clinton's re-election campaign in 1996, and his connections to Chinese government and military officials.

A subpoena for Chung is expected to be issued Friday.

Chung, a Taiwanese-born American, has told federal investigators that the chief of China's military intelligence funneled $300,000 through him to back President Clinton's 1996 campaign, sources familiar with Chung's testimony told CNN earlier this month.

The sources said only a portion of the money ever made it into Democratic Party coffers.

The Chinese government has denied the accusations.

Federal law prohibits financial contributions to political campaigns from sources outside the United States.

Chung contributed about $400,000 to various Democratic campaigns and visited the Clinton White House about 50 times.

Last year, he pleaded guilty to election law violations and began cooperating with the Justice Department's investigation into alleged 1996 fund-raising irregularities. In December, he was sentenced to probation and community service.
