Clinton raises money for Sen. Torricelli, ignores Lewinsky interview
March 4, 1999 NEWARK, New Jersey (AllPolitics, March 4) -- President Bill Clinton attended a fund-raiser Wednesday night for Sen. Robert Torricelli that raised $2.15 million for the New Jersey Democrat, officials said. A spokesman said the $2.15 million that the $1,000-a-plate dinner brought in was the most ever raised in a single night for a member of Congress. The fund-raiser far exceeded earlier expectations of $1.2 million.
Torricelli proved to be a staunch supporter of the president throughout his Senate impeachment trial. In his speech, Clinton praised the senator: "He has been my friend in good times and bad and I will never forget it." The fund-raiser took place just before Monica Lewinsky's two-hour interview on ABC with Barbara Walters aired nationally. Before Clinton came on stage, Gloria Gaynor sang her signature song, the disco anthem "I Will Survive," as well as the Motown hit, "Never Can Say Goodbye," bringing the 1,500 supporters to their feet clapping along. Indirectly addressing the scandal that has plagued his presidency for the past year, Clinton said, "When she was singing her song, you know, we were all back there, singing off stage." "I was trying to decide whether it was more appropriate for me to sing 'I Will Survive,'" Clinton said, prompting a wave of laughter and cheers. The president traveled back to Washington after the event as the Lewinsky interview was broadcast. Clinton did not watch, according to White House spokesman Joe Lockhart. Lockhart said he also doubted the president would watch a videotape of it. Lockhart said the president was not "isolated" from the interview, but from what he had heard, "There was nothing that hasn't been reported." |
