RNC picks new chief of staff
March 2, 1999 WASHINGTON (March 2) -- Tom Cole, the Oklahoma Secretary of State and a close adviser to Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating, will become the new chief of staff at the Republican National Committee (RNC), CNN has learned. Cole will serve under RNC Chairman Jim Nicholson. The official announcement is expected to come Thursday. The appointment of Cole demonstrates a further consolidation of power in the Republican party by Keating, who currently serves as chairman of the Republican Governors Association. It also signals a growing influence of the George W. Bush presidential forces at the RNC, since Keating is a staunch Bush supporter and organizer. Cole is no stranger to Washington politics, having served as executive director of the National Republican Congressional Committee from 1991-1993. His appointment follows the re-election of Nicholson as chairman of the RNC in January, despite criticism by some party insiders that weak leadership on Nicholson's part contributed to the party's loss of seats in the U.S. House and Senate in the 1998 elections. CNN's Beth Fouhy contributed to this report. |
