Justice reviews Blumenthal allegationsBy Pierre Thomas/CNN
February 8, 1999 WASHINGTON (February 8) -- Justice Department officials are conducting a review to determine whether to investigate allegations that White House senior aide Sidney Blumenthal may have committed perjury in his Senate deposition about the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky affair, Justice officials told CNN.
Blumenthal's deposition account denying that he had ever leaked information provided by the president describing Lewinsky as a "stalker" is being challenged by journalist Christopher Hitchens. Hitchens said Blumenthal mentioned the stalker description at a lunch with him and Hitchens' wife. Blumenthal's attorney has called Hitchens' allegation ludicrous. Justice officials say they have received no official referral from Congress and are simply reviewing press accounts to determine if further investigation is warranted. |
