Gore's approval rating right up there with Clinton's
January 31, 1999 (AllPolitics, January 31) -- How does Vice President Al Gore compare to President Bill Clinton in the public's mind? The latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll of 1,031 adults, conducted January 22-24, shows that Gore's approval rating is almost as high as that of his boss: 64 percent approve of how Gore is handling his job as vice president, compared with 69 percent who approve of how Clinton is handling his job. But a majority of Americans say they have a positive view of Gore as a person, while most Americans have a negative view of Clinton personally. Americans believe that Gore is honest and trustworthy and that he provides good moral leadership -- two qualities on which the public gives Clinton low marks. But when it comes to his close association with Clinton, the bottom line for Gore is mixed: 36 percent say they are more likely to vote for Gore because of his close association with Clinton, but 39 percent say they are less likely to vote for him for that same reason. One in five Americans say that Gore's association with Clinton will not affect their votes.
