Steve Forbes hires key Iowa operative
January 28, 1999 WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, January 28) -- Steve Grubbs, the outgoing Iowa Republican state chairman, has agreed to be a key point man for Steve Forbes in Iowa during his likely run for the presidential bid in 2000, sources close to Forbes told CNN. Grubbs has reportedly been courted by a number of presidential hopefuls, including Texas Gov. George W. Bush. The Grubbs appointment signals an effort by the Forbes team to build a strong ground operation in Iowa, something they did not develop during his 1996 presidential run. Other candidates have already signed up several Iowa heavy hitters. Former Gov. Terry Branstad is chairing the Lamar Alexander presidential effort, and Brian Kennedy, former executive director of the state party, is Alexander's national political director. Marlys Popma, considered by many to be the top GOP grassroots organizer in Iowa, has signed on as deputy political director for conservative activist Gary Bauer. Other Republicans exploring a presidential run in 2000 include former American Red Cross president Elizabeth Dole, Arizona Sen. John McCain, Ohio Rep. John Kasich, and New Hampshire Sen. Bob Smith. Several others, including Pat Buchanan, a CNN commentator and former presidential candidate, are considering a run as well. |
