Budget surpluses expected to grow more than projected
January 16, 1999
WASHINGTON (CNN) - CNN has confirmed published reports that
budget surpluses over the next decade will grow considerably
more than first projected.
The Senate Budget Committee expects a $522 billion surplus in the non-Social Security part of the federal budget from the years 1999 to 2008. Using a 10-year projection from 2000 to 2009, the surplus could be as much as $700 billion. Key senators have been briefed on the new projections. A spokesman for the committee expects Budget Chairman Pete Domenici, a New Mexico Republican, to unveil the budget figures as early as next week. And tax cuts are likely to be proposed in any Republican budget plan this year. |
