WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, January 16) -- A Republican member of Congress called on President Clinton to outline a plan to save the Social Security system when he makes his State of the Union speech next Tuesday.

"I will join with you next week in listening to the president, and in hoping that along with promises about saving Social Security, he will also offer a plan to save it," Rep. Tillie Fowler (R-Florida) said Saturday in the weekly GOP radio address.

Fowler also called for spending more tax dollars on education and the military, as well as providing tax relief.

"Better schools for our children, a solvent and stable Social Security system for our seniors, tax relief for American families, giving our men and women in uniform the respect and resources they so richly deserve: This is the agenda we will be fighting for on your behalf," she said.

Fowler said the Republican Congress is not spending all of its energies on the president's impeachment trial in the Senate.

"The media may want to portray Congress as devoting all of its attention on the matter involving the president. But as vice chairman of the House Republican Conference, I can assure you that we are focused on doing the people's work," she said.

Fowler said its time to put away the partisan battles that have characterized Capitol Hill over the last year.

"Republicans believe that there can be no better resolution for the new year than resolving that 1999 will be a year to focus our energies on results, not rhetoric; on similarities, not differences; and on action, not political posturing," she said.
