Jurors ponder verdict in Susan McDougal caseSANTA MONICA, California (AllPolitics, November 18) -- Jurors in the embezzlement trial of Whitewater figure Susan McDougal will meet again Thursday to deliberate on a verdict. The case went to the jury Wednesday, but no verdict was reached before jurors were sent home for the day. McDougal is charged with stealing money from conductor Zubin Mehta and his wife, Nancy, while working as their bookkeeper. In their final arguments, the prosecution painted McDougal as a "con woman" who took advantage of Nancy Mehta. But the defense contended that Nancy Mehta's testimony during the trial was unbelievable and that the charges had not been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. McDougal is a friend of President Clinton and his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, from their days in Arkansas. She and her then-husband, Jim, were partners with the Clintons in Whitewater, a failed land development in the 1980s that has been the subject of numerous investigations. McDougal was jailed on contempt charges for refusing to cooperate with the investigation of Whitewater Independent Counsel Ken Starr. She faces another trial on two counts of criminal contempt and one count of obstruction of justice for refusing to answer questions from Starr's prosecutors and grand jurors. McDougal has insisted her refusal to cooperate stems from her belief that Starr and his prosecutors want her to provide false testimony implicating President Clinton. At the request of McDougal's lawyers, a federal judge in Little Rock postponed her trial on the contempt and obstruction charges until February 16. It has been scheduled to begin November 30. |
