Reid defends Democratic Senate seat in Nevada

(AllPolitics, November 3) -- Incumbent Democratic Sen. Harry Reid sucessfully defended his seat Tuesday against a strong challenge by his Republican opponent, U.S. Rep. John Ensign.

Reid, who won his 1992 re-election campaign by 10 points, has a reputation as a feisty political professional with moderate views. He has held several posts in Nevada, including assemblyman, lieutenant governor and chairman of the state gaming commission.

As a two-term congressman representing Nevada's 1st congressional district, the 40-year-old Ensign mounted a spirited campaign, forcing Reid to pay for TV ads early in the race.

As the contest went on, Reid, 58, become increasingly critical of Ensign, dismissing his legislative background and attacking him on everything from nuclear-waste removal to education. Reid bragged about bringing billions of federal dollars to the state as a member of the Appropriations Committee.

But Ensign hammered Reid as a tax-and-spend liberal. In one ad, Ensign claimed Reid had voted for $433 billion in new taxes during his career.

Some observers believed Reid's hardball tactics reflected a tight race, although Reid cited Democratic surveys showing him in the lead.

Both candidates were well-funded, with no clear financial advantage for either side in the final days.

Political analyst Stuart Rothenberg contributed to this report.
