Green pulls Republican upset in Wisconsin
Democratic incumbent Johnson falls
(AllPolitics, November 3) -- Republican Mark Green, a state representative, pulled off an upset Tuesday against one-term Rep. Jay Johnson for Wisconsin's 8th district seat.
In the final days of the election, Johnson was considered the most vulnerable Democratic incumbent in the nation.
A former local TV anchor, Johnson was well-liked and won an upset victory of his own two years ago in this Republican-leaning district. Ever since, he has been near the top of the Republican target list.
Green, 38, easily won a competitive Republican primary. He is a lawyer from Green Bay.
On the campaign trail Green accused Johnson of being less centrist and more liberal than he portrayed himself.
Because of the tight race, Johnson, 55, was expected to vote with the Republicans in favor their broad impeachment inquiry of President Bill Clinton, but to the pleasant surprise of his party instead opted for a time-limited inquiry.
It was a calculated risk in a Catholic, conservative district where the Monica Lewinsky matter actually matters. Green has called for Clinton's resignation.
In the 105th Congress, Democrats held a narrow 5-4 majority in Wisconsin's congressional delegation.
